Internship at IBM

Posted by prasanna on July 23, 2007

I had an oppurtunity to undergo an Internship at IBM India Software Labs, and underwent one this summer.Truly a great learning experience ,i was made to work on IBM Products like the Websphere application and the portal server and other IBM Products like DB2 and Content Management part of it.The work truly tested my knowledge and skills in the areas of alogorithms,Databases,Networking and other related areas. It was a real test and i passed the test that gifted me with an offer to work at the same place.Truly excited i am and looking forward to join IBM in an other year.

FAQ’s Regarding Internships

1)How did u get this oppurtunity?

I was interviewd by IBM twice through telephone as a part of screening process.I went thru both the interviews to get this oppurtunity. This telephonic interview was a part of campus placements at NIT Warangal for Internships.

2)My college campus placements does not have companies coming for internships. How do i get this oppurtunity??

You can send in your resume to talenisl@in.ibm.com .If  your resume is impressive u might be called for an interview and subsequent screening process follow therefrom

3)Is it only for C.S.E Students??

Not very strictly if u have a very good background in computerscience and your resume can reflect the same

4)What all one has to be strong with to clear such a process

U have to be strong in the full syllabi of C.S.E . ISL is the bread winner for IBM these days and 40% of IBM’s revenue come from software group. So its a prestigious issue to work for ISL and so obviously the screening process is also tough to take the very best

Any other questions about Internship at IBM Just drop in a comment i would be oblidged to reply

Thanks,

So what does it take from you to be at Stanford!!

Posted by prasanna on May 22, 2007

Its almost every computer engineers dream to study at the abode of computer education – The stanford or the MIT.But have you ever thought of what does it really ask from you to be up there.I had the same question and so decided to interact with one of my seniors at Stanford and this is how our conversation went!!

“”

This is T.L.Prasanna.I am 2 years junior to you at NIT Warangal. How are u doing at stanford.I just wanted to clear some queries regarding admissions to stanford.

What do they give primary weightage to while admitting students there.I dont have a good C.G .It is just 7.00.

CG  is given highest priority. Ofcourse, high CG doesnt guarantee the admit if you cant show research potential. At the same time, there will be ‘special’ cases always. If you can show research potential through your SOP, you will have some chance.

I have done 2 internships. One at a startup company during my winter. And rite now i am doing my summer internship at IBM India Software Labs(ISL).I am also going to do a research oriented project with one of the new faculty in our department next semester.

Again, it all depends how well you can show your potential in research. Even an intern at Google, given a dumb project is useless.  Your two internships can add to the content of your SOP.

i am also planning to give the subject GRE Exam.what is the validity of that exam. How much of a weightage is given to that.and how many international papers does a prof expect a student to have in order to give admission and how much GRE score one should have.

International publication will definitely weigh more, it may not guarantee your admission though.

Any GRE score above 1400 should be good. If you have something around 90th percentile in subject GRE, that will give you some edge.

I have some extra credentials with my Extra curricular activities.I am the Chairman of IEEE-Student Branch NITW and also working of many other clubs.

They have zero weight. No point even in mentioning anywhere while apping to any university.

“”

So how was it??do u have any chances??i have a very bleak one.but lets see.do put in your thoughts as comments!!

Get down and push – Driver

Posted by prasanna on May 17, 2007

Ever heard of people getting off the train and pushing it!!!ya it happened in Bihar the hometown of Lallu the pretigious railway minister. The train stopped midway in a neutral zone after a passenger pulled the chains and so it could not take electricity.Usually the momentum of the train allows it to go past these neutral zones where the electricity supply is not available.People the on the request by the driver had to get down and then push the engine.60m farther the train took electricity and then gained momentum to ferry its passengers to its destination

Dear lalu its high time u get on to checking the safety measures of Indian railways.Given the number of people that travel by Railways everyday safety must be the primary concern for the railways.but its a bitter fact that it is being neglected

Need not meet your heads daughter – still a 5 pointer

Posted by prasanna on May 8, 2007

This headline talks about my semester experience where i was moved to a sudden shock after seeing my results…

never did i go for jogging in the morning….

never did anybody’s vehicle hit me…

never did i meet my heads daughter..

But the results rolled out and i am a proud 5 pointer..that would on anyday fall as a shock to a person who has performed decently throughout his life till then..

The fact that i have worked day in and day out for the welfare of the college students as

chairman – IEEE Student branch

Developer Department website

Co-ordinator – Training and placements section and …

intensifies the pain..i sometime in last week got a chance to interact with the director of Cisco Systems india..Mr Venkat Pullela.he is an alumni of NIT Warangal and had landed to college to assist students in their vacation project…We broke out on a discussion about the marking system in the college and its validity.he openly agreed the industry more or less does not give weightage to these grades as they are often misleading but we commonly agreed upon the fact that students with high grades are more committed to their alloted work

Ya thats very much true…but what about students who show commitment towards other activities and display an excellent leadership quality..where are we guaged or graded upon these jobs..thats the bitter part of college life and thats true..we are industry ready and not university ready..thats reality

with tears and sorrows,

The boy whom i met at the subway

Posted by prasanna on April 3, 2007

last saturday i had been to hyderabad to look out for a lappy that i am planning to purchase. Its more or less become a habit now for me to visit the Subway restaurant whenever i visit hyd. That day was no different.I was accompanied by Harish and Zeryline the dutch trainee at AZRI.We happened to go to the Subway at Banjara Hills. At the gate i found a boy selling chikkis. He was pricing them at 3 for 45.That was quite high.I tried bargaining but in vain.He never brought down the price. Then i muttered a word or two with harish.

I heard someone calling me from behind addressing me sir. When i turned back to my surprise i found the same boy speaking to me in English-Good plain english.I was just taken aback. His fluency was superb.I could not resist now.I asked him a few questions about his family and it was all surprises to fill me with

The boy named Ahmad came from a very poor ISLAMIC Family.he studied in a Telugu medium school and his father is a labourer. He tells me that he has learnt english by himself and that was his passion. The boy will not be more than 8 years of age and has got a lot of self determination.I hope he will turn in to one of the big leaders of the nation

Passport Camp at NIT Warangal – a report

Posted by prasanna on March 25, 2007

The student council of NIT Warangal hosted a two day passport camp here in the institute.Passport officers from Passport office,Hyderabad had come down here for two days to issue passport to more than 1000 students. This was one of the best jobs by the student council after it took over a few weeks ago.The college has spent over 50,000 rs in conducting this, the fund being allocated from the student activities fund!!i had a chance to interact with one of the senior officials Mr Sampath.here is an excerpt of our interaction

me:   How did the idea of this camp got initiated??

Mr Sampath:  The initial request must have come from the college.i am not aware of what happened initially.but later on the passport office identified the importance and gave a go to this

me:   Why and what is the importance of this passport camp??

Mr Sampath:  its obviously very important.as you can see so many students are getting benefitted.Otherwise they have to come down to hyderabad and stand in the queue and waste their time.this saves a lot of time of many students.

me:   how often such camps are conducted and by which other passport offices

Mr Sampath:   passport camps happen frequently.infact we are going to an other college the very next day after this 2 day camp.this is a normal feature with other regional passport offices as well. but our office is functioning very well.

me :how are the employees compensated for working on weekends.is it compulsary for them to attend??(more than 25 employees had come down)

Mr Sampath   :the employees are compensated with a two more holidays.apart from that they are not paid anything extra for this.the passport officer has some powers and within that he can issue orders to the employees to work on weekends as well provoded compensation is given. This is one such instance.

me  :how do you think is the response here?

Mr Sampath:  the response is not bad though we expected more than 800 on the first day we had only 600 applicants.we expect the same number during the second day

me:  comments on hospitality provided by the college

Mr Sampath:  The students have done a wonderful job in arranging for food and shelter here for all of us.we are extremely satisfied with the hospitality
